Penggunaan this, that, these, dan those untuk menunjuk orang atau benda dekat dan jauh.
Demonstratives
Demonstratives (kata tunjuk) digunakan untuk menunjuk orang, benda, atau sesuatu.
Dalam bahasa Inggris, ada empat demonstratives utama:

Catatan: "Dekat" dan "jauh" tidak selalu berarti jarak secara fisik. Demonstratives juga bisa digunakan untuk membicarakan sesuatu yang sedang dibicarakan, ditunjukkan, atau dirasakan dekat/jauh dalam konteks.
Demonstratives dapat digunakan dalam dua fungsi:
- Demonstrative pronoun (kata ganti tunjuk) — berdiri sendiri tanpa noun.
- Demonstrative determiner (penentu tunjuk) — langsung diikuti noun.
Dalam pembelajaran dasar, fungsi kedua sering disebut demonstrative adjective. Namun, dalam tata bahasa Inggris modern, istilah demonstrative determiner lebih tepat karena kata seperti this dan that bukan adjective (kata sifat).
Demonstrative Pronouns
Demonstrative pronoun (kata ganti tunjuk) berdiri sendiri dan tidak langsung diikuti oleh noun.

Digunakan untuk menunjuk satu benda/orang yang dekat.

Digunakan untuk menunjuk satu benda/orang yang jauh.

Those
Digunakan untuk menunjuk beberapa benda/orang yang jauh.

Perhatikan penggunaan is dan are:
- This is ... → tunggal
- That is ... → tunggal

Demonstrative Determiners
Demonstrative determiner (penentu tunjuk) digunakan sebelum noun untuk menunjukkan benda atau orang tertentu.
Pola:
demonstrative + noun
This + singular noun
This digunakan sebelum singular noun (kata benda tunggal).

This book is interesting. Buku ini menarik.
Perhatikan bahwa this langsung diikuti noun tunggal:
- this shirt
- this restaurant
- this book
These + plural noun
These digunakan sebelum plural noun (kata benda jamak).

These shirts are clean. Kemeja-kemeja ini bersih.

These restaurants are popular. Restoran-restoran ini populer.

These books are interesting. Buku-buku ini menarik.
Perhatikan bahwa these langsung diikuti noun jamak:
- these shirts
- these restaurants
- these books
This dan These
This dan these sama-sama berarti "ini" dan digunakan untuk sesuatu yang dianggap dekat.
Perbedaannya terletak pada jumlah:
- This → satu
- These → lebih dari satu

That dan those sama-sama berarti "itu" dan biasanya digunakan untuk sesuatu yang dianggap lebih jauh.
Perbedaannya:
- That → satu
- Those → lebih dari satu
