There Is & There Are

Cara menyatakan keberadaan sesuatu dengan there is dan there are beserta pola kalimat positif, negatif, dan tanya.

There Is dan There Are

There is dan there are digunakan untuk mengatakan bahwa sesuatu ada atau terdapat di suatu tempat.

  • There is = ada/terdapat untuk satu benda atau uncountable noun (kata benda yang tidak dapat dihitung satu per satu).
  • There are = ada/terdapat untuk lebih dari satu benda.

Catatan: Dalam pola ini, there berfungsi sebagai dummy subject (subjek formal), sedangkan kata benda setelah is/are menunjukkan benda yang sedang dibicarakan. Untuk pemula, cara termudah adalah mencocokkan is dengan kata benda tunggal dan are dengan kata benda jamak.

1. There Is

There is digunakan sebelum:

  • singular noun (kata benda tunggal).
  • uncountable noun (kata benda yang tidak dapat dihitung satu per satu).

Contoh

  • There is a phone on the sofa. Ada sebuah ponsel di sofa.

  • There is an egg in the fridge. Ada sebuah telur di dalam kulkas.

  • There is some milk in the glass. Ada sedikit susu di dalam gelas.

  • There is a student in the library. Ada seorang siswa di perpustakaan.

Perhatikan bahwa a/an digunakan sebelum kata benda tunggal yang dapat dihitung.

There is a chair in my room. Ada sebuah kursi di kamar saya.

Untuk uncountable noun, kita tidak menggunakan a/an.

There is some rice in the bowl. Ada nasi di dalam mangkuk.

2. There Are

There are digunakan sebelum plural noun (kata benda jamak).

Contoh

  • There are three chairs in the room. Ada tiga kursi di dalam ruangan.

  • There are some cookies on the plate. Ada beberapa kue di atas piring.

  • There are two children in the park. Ada dua anak di taman.

  • There are many cars outside the house. Ada banyak mobil di luar rumah.

Perhatikan bahwa kata benda setelah there are berbentuk jamak, misalnya chairs, cookies, children, dan cars.

3. Bentuk Negatif

Untuk membuat kalimat negatif, tambahkan not setelah is/are.

There is not

  • There is not a bus at the station. Tidak ada bus di halte tersebut.

  • There isn't any coffee in the cup. Tidak ada kopi di dalam cangkir.

There are not

  • There are not any students in the classroom. Tidak ada siswa di dalam kelas.

  • There aren't any clean plates in the kitchen. Tidak ada piring bersih di dapur.

Bentuk singkat

Dalam bahasa Inggris sehari-hari, bentuk singkat lebih umum digunakan:

Catatan penting: Untuk menyatakan bahwa tidak ada sesuatu secara umum, any sering digunakan dalam kalimat negatif.

Contoh:

  • There isn't any water in the bottle. Tidak ada air di dalam botol.

  • There aren't any books on the shelf. Tidak ada buku di rak.

4. Bentuk Tanya

Untuk membuat pertanyaan, letakkan is/are di awal kalimat.

Is there + singular noun/uncountable noun ...?

  • Is there a supermarket near here? Apakah ada supermarket di dekat sini?

    Yes, there is. Ya, ada.

    No, there isn't. Tidak, tidak ada.

  • Is there any juice in the fridge? Apakah ada jus di dalam kulkas?

    Yes, there is. Ya, ada.

    No, there isn't. Tidak, tidak ada.

Are there + plural noun ...?

  • Are there any seats available? Apakah masih ada kursi yang tersedia?

    Yes, there are. Ya, ada.

    No, there aren't. Tidak, tidak ada.

  • Are there two bathrooms in this house? Apakah ada dua kamar mandi di rumah ini?

    Yes, there are. Ya, ada.

    No, there aren't. Tidak, tidak ada.

Cara mudah mengingat

  • 1 benda → There is
  • Lebih dari 1 → There are
  • Benda yang tidak dapat dihitung → There is

Contoh:

There is a laptop on the desk. Ada sebuah laptop di atas meja.

There are two laptops on the desk. Ada dua laptop di atas meja.

There is some coffee on the desk. Ada sedikit kopi di atas meja.
